Seeing the Chiropractor: Tips for Your First Time

There are so many benefits to seeing the chiropractor. Not only will your back and neck pain subside, but you may also have an easier time sleeping, feel more supple when you exercise, and find that your headaches ease up. But with as excellent as chiropractic care can be, many people are still nervous to see the chiropractor for the first time. Here are a few tips to make sure your first time goes off without a hitch!

Take a deep breath

Many people are worried that their chiropractor is going to cause them some pain when they manipulate their spine. Because they are afraid, they tense up their muscles. This won't make the adjustment hurt per say, but it will make your chiropractor work harder to adjust your joints. As such, you may be a little more sore the next day. For best results, when you lay down on your chiropractor's table, just take a deep breath, exhale, and do your best to relax. 

Don't be afraid to ask questions

Chiropractors focus on whole-body health, and they tend to have a more open approach to care than physicians, who are often left to rush through the services they provide. As such, your chiropractor should be happy to answer any questions you have -- so don't be afraid to ask them. You can even ask questions about other health problems you might have that are seemingly unrelated to back pain. Your chiropractor will offer advice if they are knowledgeable on the topic or refer you to another professional if needed.

Be honest about your medical history

One of the first things you'll need to do at this appointment is fill out a form about your medical history. It is important that you are thorough and honest in doing so. Your chiropractor needs to know if you have any past or existing medical conditions that may interfere with the way their treatment works.

Write down any followup advice

When your chiropractor is done adjusting you, he or she will probably give you some advice for self-care to help ease your symptoms even more. You may be given stretches to do, or you may be told to sit a certain way. Since it's easy to get overwhelmed by all the advice you are offered during these appointments, be prepared to write it down or record it all in your phone so you can reference it later.
